Pet Food Shopping and Preparation: Learn What Your Dogs Need

by Melinda Smith

Pet food is the source of energy and vital nutrients for our beloved pets, not just any old thing to feed them.Being a dog owner, it is our responsibility to care for them properly and feed them nutritious and delicious food.Man's best friends, our beloved dogs, are often given foods that we eat without knowing that these are detrimental to our pets' health. What they need are foods that contain vitamins and minerals that would improve their fur, teeth, bones, stamina, skin and overall health. They need these to fight off bacteria, parasites and other viruses that threaten their lives, too.

Dogs don't just need vitamins and minerals, they need the other essential compounds like carbohydrates, protein, fiber and fat.To build strong muscles, good coat, nails, skin and healthy cells, our dogs need protein which meat, fish and eggs, among others, can provide.Fat transports vitamins in our pet's system, boost metabolism and is a known source of energy. Another primary source of energy is carbohydrates, which our dogs get from pet food such as raw meat, fruits and vegetables.

On the other hand, it is also important to know what foods are bad for your dog. Like humans, dogs can fall victim to malnutrition, obesity and health disorders such as cancer, arthritis, bowel disease, bladder and kidney stones, diabetes and skin problems, to name a few. Some of the big no-no's to feed them include cooked chicken bones, chocolates, garlic, onion, beans and excessive amounts of protein. To personally monitor their pet's food intake, many owners end up preparing homemade dog food themselves.

Aside from being able to monitor your dog's food intake, homemade dog food is also beneficial to your budget. Like any personal activity, deciding to take charge in making your pet's food requires time and effort on your part, but it will be all worth it.Just remember not to add preservatives and added spices, especially garlic, and to balance their diet and add variety to it. Cooked good grains such as brown rice and whole wheat can be included as small portions in their meal. There are many kinds of dog food in the market, and one is the premium dog food that promises dog food using only the best ingredients. These kinds are known to use ingredients without fillers or by-products and, known for its sophistication, these kinds of dog food often come in different shapes and color.

But before you start concocting your own recipes, you should see your pup's veterinarian to understand exactly what your pet needs.

To learn about pet food needs, you should start by meeting your dog's veterinarian to discuss with him/her your pet's needs. It doesn't matter whether you purchase dog foods or make them yourself, knowing more from professionals is the way to go.But remember that each dog's needs vary depending on their breed, age, sizes and their level of activity. You should also remember to slowly, and day by day, change your dog's food if he has gone accustomed to a certain, unhealthy diet. They are, after all, similar to humans who doesn't take drastic diet change with open arms.

Pet food and snacks are essential to your pet's health and overall well-being. Dogs, man's best friend, is the most challenging pet to feed because of its needs for vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, fat, protein and many other compounds. Having a bad diet can result to many illnesses and diseases for your dogs, as serious as cancer. To care for their beloved canine, some people resort to buying premium dog food while other feed dogs with homemade dog food.
